The Activities of the Council Include:
Accreditation of entry-level physiotherapy education programs offered by higher education providers
Assessment of qualifications and skills of overseas-qualified physiotherapists for registration and migration purposes
Provision of advice, recommendations and consulting services to the Physiotherapy Board of Australia and other relevant organizations, in relation to accreditation and assessment
National and international liaison with other professional bodies, regulators and educators on matters related to standards of education and practice and global recognition of physiotherapy qualifications
Maintenance and regular review of the Accreditation Standard
Skill Assessments:
You can apply for a Skill Assessment if you have one of the following:
A qualification completed in Australia that is included in the Board’s Approved Programs of Study list
OR
A Council-issued Certificate of Substantial Equivalence after successfully completing the Equivalence of Qualification pathway
OR
A Council-issued Final Certificate after successfully completing the Standard Assessment pathway
OR
Current and unconditional General Registration with the Physiotherapy Board of Australia
OR
A current and unconditional Annual Practising Certificate with the Physiotherapy Board of New Zealand
AND
You meet AHPRA’s English Language Skills Registration Standard for physiotherapists.
What If I Don’t Meet the Application Requirements?
If you do not currently meet any of the above requirements you will need to go through the necessary steps to qualify for a Skills Assessment. This could be by:
Completing a Board Approved Program of Study at an accredited Australian university
Successfully completing the Standard Assessment pathway or Equivalence of Qualification pathway with the Council to obtain a Final Certificate or Certificate of Substantial Equivalence.
The type of Skills Assessment you need will depend on the visa you are applying for. We offer Skills Assessments for Temporary Graduate Visas as well as Permanent Residence/Skilled Regional (Provisional) Visas. Please see the ‘Further Assessment Information’ section below for further details on the application process for a Skills Assessment for each of these types of visa.
Requirements of Standard Assessment Pathway:
To apply for this pathway, you need to be:
- An overseas qualified physiotherapist (with a minimum of a diploma-level qualification); AND
- Meet the qualification requirement (or already hold) registration without any restriction; OR
Be able to legally practice without restriction in your country of training.
There are no experience or English language requirements for the Standard Assessment pathway. However, you may be required to produce evidence of these when it comes to applying for registration. For more information please visit the Board’s website.

Requirements of Equivalence of Qualification Pathway:
The Equivalence of Qualification pathway evaluates whether an overseas physiotherapy qualification could be considered substantially comparable to an accredited Australian entry-level program as a route to General Registration with the Physiotherapy Board of Australia (the Board). General Registration is required in order to practice as a physiotherapist in Australia.
Cultural Safety Training
From the 15th January 2020, all candidates starting the Equivalence of Qualification Pathway, will be required to complete the Cultural Safety Training program.
There are no experience or English language requirements for the Equivalence of Qualification pathway. However, you may be required to produce evidence of these when it comes to applying for registration. Please see the Physiotherapy Board of Australia’s (the Board’s) website for more information on this.

The minimum cost of the Standard Assessment pathway is $7250.00. This is exclusive of the Cultural Safety Training program and payment transaction fees.
*FLYR Stream candidates are only required to complete the Eligibility Assessment and Written Assessment. The minimum cost of the FLYR stream is $3050.00. This is exclusive of the Cultural Safety Training program and payment transaction fees.
