If you have a questions about the submission of an application for Migration Skills Assessment with the Institute of Managers and Leaders (IML), please read the following frequently asked questions.
Does the Institute of Managers and Leaders offer immigration advice?
No, IML does not offer immigration advice to applicants wanting to know if they should submit an application to have their qualifications assessed. We recommend that all applicants directly contact the Department of Home Affairs for advice about their specific visa requirements prior to submitting their application to IML. We will assess all qualification applications submitted. It is the applicant’s responsibility to confirm if a qualifications assessment is required prior to submitting an application. Can you advise about Australian Visa options?
No, IML cannot provide advice on Australian visas. Please visit the Department of Home Affairs website for information at www.homeaffairs.gov.au.
What is the difference between a Migration Skills Assessment through the Institute of Managers and Leaders and those assessed through other organisations such as Vetassess?
IML assesses applications for senior-level managers only. All other positions are assessed for migration purposes by VETASSESS or other assessing authorities.
I have just finished my management qualification but I do not have any practical experience. Will my request for migration assessment be successful and by what criteria is it judged?
The Institute of Managers and Leaders is contracted as an assessing authority by the Australian Government to assess senior-level management skills for applicants for the purpose of skilled migration to Australia. IML assesses the following occupations:
- Chief Executive or Managing Director [111111]
- Corporate General Manager [111211]
- Sales and Marketing Manager [131112]
- Advertising Manager [131113]
- Public Relations Manager [131114]
- Human Resource Manager [132311]
- Engineering Manager [133211]
- Supply and Distribution Manager [133611]
- Procurement Manager [133612]
Recent graduates are not able to meet the requirements – work experience is essential. Please explore other visa options on the website of the Department of Home Affairs.
I don’t think I will qualify for the skills assessment as a Senior Manager, but I have another specialty. Are there any other bodies through which I can be assessed for the purpose of migration to Australia?

I have many years of experience as a manager but no formal qualifications. Will my request for migration assessment be successful?
Educational qualifications are not mandatory in order to gain a positive Migration Skills Assessment. Applicants should check the Assessment Criteria as to the level of management responsibilities required.
Can I be assessed for more than one occupation?
No, applicants are required to allocate on the application form the occupation which they wish to be assessed against. Additionally, applicants must provide documentary evidence from work experience and/or educational qualifications to support the chosen occupation. If applicants wish to be assessed against a different occupation, then a new application must be submitted with documentary evidence to support the different occupation.
Before I submit my paperwork I would like an indication if my application will be successful. Do I have to pay the associated fee upfront irrespective of whether I will be successful?
Yes, all applications must be accompanied by an upfront application fee. IML incurs professional and administrative costs of processing and assessing your application. As such, it is not possible for IML to provide you with advice on your application before it is officially received with the associated application fee.

How do I appoint a migration agent or end the appointment of a migration agent?
Please use IML’s Migration Agent Authorisation Form to appoint or end the appointment of a migration agent in relation to your Migration Skills Assessment. Please ensure that you sign the form and attach it to your lodgement as supporting documentation.
How long does the assessment process take?
The normal assessment process takes up to approximately eight (8) weeks from the time of receipt of the application if no further information or clarification is required. The Express assessment process takes up to approximately four (4) weeks from the time of receipt of the application if no further information or clarification is required.

Can I receive a refund on my application fee?
No, your application fee covers the professional and administrative costs of processing and assessing your application. Irrespective of the outcome of your application, the application fee is not refundable.
Can I pay by Credit Card?
Yes, you can pay for your Management Skills Assessment by credit card, including Visa, Mastercard and Amex
What is the express assessment?
The Express Assessment Fee fast-tracks the assessment to be completed within 4 (four) weeks from the point in time at which you complete application including all required supporting documents and successful payment of the application fee is received. If further information is required, this timeframe will take longer. For more information please visit our Processing Times website.
What supporting documentation has to be submitted together with my application?

How long is the Migration Skills Assessment outcome valid for?
Successful assessments are valid for a period of two (2) years from the date of issue.
Can I obtain a copy of my assessment outcome letter?
A copy of successful assessment outcome letters can be issued only within two years of the original assessment date. If the original assessment was carried out over two years ago no copy can be provided and a new application must be submitted. Please note the copy of the assessment outcome will be emailed only. No hard copies will be provided.
Can the assessment outcome letter be extended?
Assessment outcome letters can be extended for a maximum of 12 months if the original result has not yet expired. Applicants wishing to extend their outcome letter can lodge their request using our online form. All assessment extension requests will incur a non-refundable fee.
Please note if your original assessment outcome has expired a new application must be submitted. Also, if a further outcome letter is required upon expiration of the 12-month extension applicants must submit a new application form.
Can I appeal against the assessment outcome?
Yes. If you disagree with the assessment outcome you can:
- request to have your assessment decision reviewed; or
- appeal the decision if your original and/or review applications were both unsuccessful.

Is Membership with the Institute of Managers and Leaders required for assessment?
No, membership of the Institute of Managers and Leaders is not required for assessment purposes but it is recommended for professional development and networking purposes.
I am a Member of IML ANZ – does that automatically qualify me for migration assessment?
No, any grading of experience undertaken by any IML for the purposes of membership does not automatically translate into approval under the Migration Skills Assessment process. Please read the Criteria fully before submitting an application.
Do I need to take an English test as part of my skills assessment with IML?
No, IML does not require English language test results as part of the Migration Skills Assessment process.
